Hypnosis is the art of working with the brain by using the way it naturally functions.

If your mind can generate stress before a high-stakes meeting, imagining every possible scenario in which things might go wrong, then guiding it to create calm, clarity, and focus relies on exactly the same mechanisms.

Yet very few of us were ever taught how to do this.

The hypnotic state, often called a “modified state of consciousness,” is entirely natural. Each of us enters it several times a day without noticing: when we become fully absorbed in a task, when our thoughts drift during a commute, or when a film captivates us so deeply that we react emotionally to events we know are fictional.

In these moments, the conscious mind steps aside and allows the unconscious to become more present. This is why an imagined situation — a movie scene, a memory, a projection of the future — can generate very real emotions and physiological responses.

This state is also where the brain learns most efficiently. Much of our behaviour is the result of unconscious learning accumulated over time.

The role of the hypnotherapist is to intentionally activate this state, at the appropriate depth, to communicate directly with the unconscious. In this space, the conscious and unconscious mind can work together — sometimes almost as if they were dialoguing.

Modern hypnotherapy is strongly informed by neuroscience and aligns with what we know about attention, neuroplasticity, and cognitive processing. This is one of the reasons it is increasingly integrated into healthcare settings for stress reduction and pain management.

Yet in a sense, it has always been with us, in storytelling, myths, legends, and everything that engages the human imagination.
